What to wear for your boho maternity photo session- how to look and feel great!

My clients can get overwhelmed when choosing what to wear for a maternity session.

That's why I've put together this helpful list to give you some inspiration!

  1. What to wear:

Consider a maxi dress. Maxi or midi dresses are perfect for a maternity session. They're comfortable and flattering and photograph really well. Extra points for super flowy fabric for those gorgeous movement shots!

Keep it simple. Avoid busy or loud prints and try to keep the colour neutral. Think timeless over trendy for images that won't go out of date.

Accentuate. Choose clothing that really accentuates your beautiful bump! We want to capture your growing belly in all its glory. Make sure its not hidden.

2. What if my maternity session is in Autumn or Winter?

Layer it up. If your maternity session falls in one of the cooler months and you don't fancy braving it then play around with layering! Try pairing a summer maxi dress with a short cut chunky knit and have some fun with it.

Avoid coats. Its always best to add layers underneath for extra warmth, rather than wear a coat over the top. Consider investing in some thermals and thick socks to wear with boots. You can always wear a coat to the session and remove it for the photos.

Accessorise. Accessorising with a warm shawl works well. You can also wear a winter Fedora hat for that boho chic vibe!

3. Bare the bump

Belly out. Consider opting for nude or 'bump out' photos in addition to really capture your growing bump, When done artistically these images are real works of art (and can be done any time of year if you brave it- I promise its worth it!)

Two piece co-ords. A two piece co-ord has to be one of my favourites. A maxi skirt with a gypsy style cropped top looks sensational and the height of boho chic!

Open front clothing- . An open front lace kimono or sheer fabric cover up makes for some out-of-this-world dreamy photos, alternatively you could opt for a button down maxi dress to get those bare bump photos.

4. What should my partner and older children wear if they join me?

Coordinate. If your partner or older children are joining you for your session, make sure you coordinate their outfits to go with yours. Again, keep in mind 'timeless over trendy'. Their outfits should compliment what you are wearing. For dads linen shirts and chinos work very well!

Avoid sportswear and character clothing. Dads- leave the gym wear at home and go for neutrals for the children.

Choose your outfit first. Start with your outfit and build the rest of the families clothing around that.

Client wardrobe. If you can't find anything you'd like to wear, why not make use of my client wardrobe!
